Imagine you are getting ready for work on a Monday morning. What route should you take? A computer web site shows you which routes are congested and which ones are moving freely. A cable television station shows video of any bottlenecks in your commute. On the road, your trip moves smoothly because of signboards giving you "real-time" information about accidents to avoid ahead and stoplights that adjust based on overall traffic flow. Welcome to the world of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
Vancouver is moving into the ITS world by initiating a major effort to develop a countywide, 20-year transportation system deployment plan. Under this plan, called Vancouver Area Smart Trek (VAST), public agencies in the region are coming together to develop ways in which information technology can be used to improve the efficiency and safety of the regional transportation systems and provide travelers with real-time information.
Why attend? You will learn about how other communities are dealing with congestion and other transportation issues from speakers representing the Smart Trek program in Seattle, AZTech in Arizona, DART in Dallas, and from Robert Parsons a nationally recognized ITS expert. You will have an opportunity to share your visions for a future Vancouver/Clark County with others who are committed to improving the transportation system.
Plan to attend! Look for our workshop brochure in mid January. Seats are limited in this free workshop. Reply to vast@ci.vancouver.wa.us by saying "yes I will attend." Please include your mailing address in your reply and request a copy of the workshop brochure.
